Committee Holds Lerner in Contempt, Cummings Defiant
The evidence suggests that Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was actually a participant in the unfair IRS targeting scandal while sitting as the ranking Democrat on the committee investigating the scandal. As if this his credibility isn’t damaged enough, today he doubled down in his defense of Lois Lerner and accused Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) of using “McCarthy” tactics.
The irony is astounding, given that the investigation concerns targeted partisan political activity by left wing elements in the Internal Revenue Service against private citizens who have policy disagreements with the current administration. Despite initially appearing to be concerned about the unlawful IRS activity, Cummings tried to quickly declare the investigation over based on the White House story about “rogue” agents which is clearly false. He has tried to thwart the investigation ever since as he has with the investigation into the Benghazi massacre.
Cummings and other committee Democrats condemned the proposal to charge Lois Lerner with contempt of Congress after pleading the 5th while Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) forcefully explained how Lerner waived her 5th amendment rights by making factual assertions while refusing to answer questions. The committee voted to hold Lerner in contempt along straight party lines.
